I have a ton of earrings.
If you’re a regular follower, you probably recognize a few in the picture from previous DIY tutorials.
You’d think, by now, that I would have found a decent solution to storing all of them, right?
Wrong.
This was the solution. Ugh, earrings everywhere. I could never find a match without dumping out the whole pile. I swear I’m not this messy of a person. Disorganization drives me nuts.
Needless to say, it was time for a change.

I found a pre-built chicken wire frame at the Pat Catan’s and settled on distressed wood for the design. I really enjoy the look of distressed wood but have never tried to recreate the look on my own. It was much easier than I thought it was going to be.
Earring Hanger Materials
- Frame
- Sealant
- Sandpaper
- Chicken Wire
- Sponge brush
- Hot melt glue
- Wooden accents
- Acrylic paint (3)
If you can’t find a pre-built frame, you can buy a regular picture frame, remove the glass and staple the chicken wire to the frame.
Step 1: paint layer one
Brush on the first layer of paint. Don’t cover everything. Be careless, seriously.
Step 2: paint layer two
Brush on the second color of paint using the same process in the previous step.
Messy is good.
Step 3: paint the accents
Using the same process, paint the accent pieces.
Step 4: glue the wooden pieces together
When everything is dry, glue the accents onto the frame.
Step 5: paint layer three
Using a bit more care this time, paint on the final color.
Step 6: distress the wood
When that last layer of paint is dry, grab your sandpaper and rub it against the wood. You will have to press harder than you think.
Aim for the edges of the frame, right down the center and the accents.
Step 7: seal the wood
Brush all of the loose paint flakes from the frame and brush on your sealant.
Easy peasy! Now you have a beautifully distressed earring hanger.
I really enjoy the combination of colors. I thought about using blue and green under the brown, but I’m glad I chose the red and orange. They look nice with the brown, don’t you think? Let me know! Leave me comments 🙂
