DIY Mummy Mason Jars

DIY Mummy Mason Jars for Halloween

Since I’m doing a Halloween craft every week for Make Something Mondays, I thought I would make some mummy jars. I tried a few variations but the first one I made is still my favorite (the one in the middle). I tried an all white jar with cut out space for the eyes, one with green underneath the white for some color, and a completely white one with the eyes overtop the tissue paper.

What I’ve learned about making these is that the more obvious the paper layers are, the better. So scrunch it, rip it. twist it… whatever you need to do to show that there are layers.

Things You Will Need:
Jars
Brush
Scissors
Mod Podge
Tissue paper
Glass-safe pen

Step 1
Draw some eyeballs on your jar. Something cartoon-y will look best.

Step 2
Cut your tissue paper into strips. You don’t have to make them the same size.

I added scissors as part of the materials, but you can choose to rip the pieces if you want. It might give it a cooler effect anyway.

Step 3
Brush a layer of Mod Podge over the area of the jar you want to put your first layer on.

Press the tissue paper onto the jar, scrunching and twisting as you go.

Then, put another layer of Mod Podge over it. Continue moving down the jar and remember to add layers.

Repeat this step until your jar is mummified!

When you’re finished, you should have something that looks like this.

He’s kind of cute, you have to admit it…

I kept going and made a few more mummies.

Here’s a version with candles in them. LEDs are probably best if you choose to go that route.

If you can find some containers that are cheaper and made of plastic, you could make the mummy jars and put Halloween candy in them for the trick or treaters! If not, you can always use them as decorations, which is what I fully intend to do with mine.
