Wow, it’s been a hectic weekend! You know how I’ve been talking about my boyfriend’s soon-to-be brewery? The one I made bottle cap magnets for? Well, it opened on Saturday. Yay!
On Thursday, I made a big chalkboard for their tap room with some help from friends. I thought it would also make a nice DIY project for anyone who has considered such a craft.
Keep reading for a step-by-step tutorial.
Materials needed for a chalkboard menu
- Chalk
- Roller
- Palette
- Barn wood
- Large board
- Valspar chalk paint
Step 1: setup
Place your board in an upright position. Maybe against a wall (protected by plastic) or a beam.
Step 2: paint the board
Paint your board. I had to paint 2 coats on each board.
Let the base coat dry before applying the second coat.

Step 3: frame the chalkboard
Cut barn wood to the size of your chalkboard to frame it.
Screw the frame into place.

Step 3: design your menu
And the best part, writing up your menu.
We used basic sidewalk chalk but you can get chalk markers if you prefer.
Happy crafting!
Wow! What a great job you did on this. It is a great addition to their business.
Thanks. I had some help so I can’t take all of the credit. But it was fun!
Congrats to him on the opening! You did an awesome job with the chalk board menu…it perfectly fits the feel of the space!
Thanks a ton! They needed a menu they could change often so it seemed appropriate.
