If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you probably know that I have a big lip balm addiction collection. I’ve been using the stuff every day for years. Long enough that my lips no longer produce moisture on their own. I wish I was joking.

My shameful collection
If people asked me what I wanted for Christmas, I’d tell them lip balm because I’ll definitely use it and it’s cheap. But how cheap is it really? Prices range from $2-$5 depending on how picky you are. I’m picky. So we’re looking at the $5 end of that range.
About a year ago I decided to try making my own, not only because it’s practical but also because it’s more affordable than $5 a tube. I started with a peppermint lip balm. I like that flavor a lot, but it’s also potent so I can smell just how much I’m using. It was a good starter batch.
Now, all of those are gone and I’m ready to make more! Since fall is here and I’m not quite ready to let go of summer’s warmth and fruity flavors, I decided to make some grapefruit flavored lip balm to get me through the winter.
It was a very successful DIY project and if you’d like to make some of your own, you can follow my tutorial below.
Materials Needed for Grapefruit Lip Balm
- glass jar
- a pot
- burner
- container
- 1oz beeswax
- 1oz jojoba oil
- oz coconut oil
- measuring cup
- grapefruit essential oil
- lip balm tubes & caps
You can get coconut oil at your grocery store. You might be able to get the jojoba oil there, too. Everything you might not be able to get locally has a link to the product on Amazon.
Step 1: melt beeswax and oils
Pour the oils (excluding the grapefruit oil) and beeswax into a jar.
Fill a pot with water about a quarter of the way full. Put the jar in the water and let every melt together.
Step 2: prepare the tubes
While you’re waiting, line up your tubes in a container and place the funnel in one of them.
This will prevent big messes.
Step 3: add grapefruit flavoring
When everything is melted, get a tea towel or tongs and pull the jar out of the water.
This is going to dry quickly so work fast.
Shake about 20 drops of grapefruit oil into the jar. Stir.
When you’re ready, pour it into the tubes and let the mixture harden.
This stuff is wonderful. The perfect consistency.
I hope you like it as much as I do!
Sounds yummy.
I enjoy it. Best one I’ve made so far. Want some?
I love the idea of creating my own lip balm! Thank you for sharing! Please share your link on the Design-O-Rama link-up tomorrow. 😍
Design o Rama link up? What’s that?
I’m hosting a craft link party every Tuesday-Saturday. A place where all of my crafty friends can share their work. Stop by my blog this Tuesday afternoon to check it out!
Wonderful! Thanks for the invite!
You are so clever! Didn’t know this was a possibility.
Thanks! It’s so easy. You should try it.
You make your projects sound so temptingly easy I just might do that.
Aww, they are easy. I’d love to see a pic of you try it. FYI: you can sub olive or vegetable oil for Jojoba oil too if you need to.
Sounds like Christmas gifts….
They’re perfect for Christmas gifts!!
I make my own lotion and lip balm with beeswax too
It’s the best isn’t it? So much better than store bought because it actually works.
Love this! I’m addicted to lip balm too…totally get you on the lips not moisturizing themselves anymore. This is such a good idea! I swear I end up spending so much on chapstick, and I can’t wait to try this!

Awesome! I’m so excited that my craft was helpful for you. If you decide to make it, I’d love to know what you think! I think it works better than the store-bought stuff.
Love this idea!
Thank you! The grapefruit is the best 👍
