I’ve been stuffed up for the past few days so vapor rub has been my new best friend. I’ve even bought Vick’s Tissues. Last year, I saw a DIY for copy-cat Vick’s Shower discs and pinned it on Pinterest so that I could make them later. Since I’m sick now, I went looking for that recipe. After reading through it, I realized I didn’t have all of the essential oils I needed, but I do have vapor rub so I decided to make my own version using what I had.
If you’re feeling a bit under the weather as well, you are going to thank me for this.
Things You Will Need:
Mug
Pot
Water
Spoon
Muffin tin
Vapor rub
Baking Soda
Cupcake liners
Step 1
Fill your mug with water. I heated mine for two minutes. You want it to be hot but not boiling.
Step 2
While your water is in the microwave, line your muffin tin.
Step 3
Drop a spoonful of vapor rub into your hot water. Swirl it around and wait for it to melt. If you really can’t breath, use two spoonfuls.
Step 4
Pour some Baking soda into the bottom of the pot. Then, slowly pour some of the vapor rub water on top of it.
The goal here is to get a paste-like consistency. If you pour too much water in, just add more Baking Soda. Working in small increments works best.
If you have peppermint oil or eucalyptus oil, add a few drops to the mixture.
Step 5
Pour the paste into your cupcake liners. Just a small amount is fine. I probably filled them about 2/3 of the way.
Let them sit for 18-24 hours before you start moving them around. If your paste is too watery, you will have to wait longer.
When you’re finished, you should have some wonderful sinus-clearing shower discs! My batch made about six of them. If you want more, use more water and baking soda. Depending on the consistency of your paste, you might end up with crumbly discs. That’s not a bad thing, though, since it will disintegrate in the shower anyway.
The only problem with these is that you have to wait a day to use them. So make a bunch ahead of time and store them in a cool, dry place. Then you can get them out whenever you’re stuffed up.
Hope this has been helpful for everyone. Stay well!
How are they used? Set them down in the shower? I wonder if they mixture could be placed in baby food jars and set on a candle warmer to add the mentho component in the air.
You set these in the bottom of the shower. Then the heat released the vapor and opens up your sinuses. I’m not sure about using it on a burner. But i did see a tutorial on wax melts that you might like more: http://stephmakesstuff.wordpress.com/2013/02/28/vicks-shower-discs-and-scentsy-bars/
great idea, I’m totally making these
because Alex has sinus issues as the weather gets cold!!!!
Do it! Make sure to put essential oils in it though. It’s not a effective without them. Thanks, Elise!!! Hope you guys are doing well 😀
Thanks for the tip- Feel better son!
Thanks, Cynthia! Doing a little bit better today. That shower was the best part of my day because I could breath for 10 minutes, haha.
Excellent idea! Feel better soon!
Thank you! Feeling much better today.
Yay! 🙂
A nice tutorial, my only issue is the vaporub. It’s got petroleum-based ingredients that I personally don’t want to breathe in, and it’s SO worth it to get the essential oils. The cost of a bottle may make you balk, but consider that fact that the bottle will last you a VERY long time, and it’s super cheap. One drop goes a LONG way, especially peppermint oil, and there’s no melting involved.
Thanks for the DIY recipe!
Yeah, i would much rather have had the oils. I plan to make another version with just those. But being that sick, I had no plans to go anywhere in the snow.
Very clever and resourceful idea!!!!
Thanks! I tried 🙂
What a fantastic easy idea, dear Megan! waw even!
Youre so sweet! I was so stuffed i would’ve done anything to get rid of that cold!
