This month’s craft challenge is tin… which means that I struggled to think of something fun because so many crafters upcycle soup and tuna cans. Don’t get me wrong, those upcycles are amazing. Don’t believe me? Check them out. Bird feeders, candle holders, garden accessories… the list is endless.
But I wanted something a little more original. I chose to upcycle some coconut water cans, but you can do it with soda cans, carbonated water cans, beer cans… whatever you want. The cans I used are sturdier than the typical drinking can. It takes a lot more effort to smash them, so I’m confident that they will last for a while.
A lot of people drink soda. As a result, many of the cans get tossed in the garbage, or maybe the recycling bin. Regardless of your method of disposal, we can still find ways to reuse them instead of throwing them out.
Want to give it a shot? Grab your soda cans and keep reading.
Upcycled Tin Can Materials
- tin cans
- lace ribbon
- spray paint
- hot glue and gun
Step 1: cut off the top of the can
Using the can opener, slice off the top of the can like you would a can of vegetables.
Step 2: spray paint
Take your cans outside, or to a well-ventilated area.
Flip your cans upside down. (I laid down paper towns to avoid coloring the pavement, but that’s optional.)
let the cans dry for 1 minute between layers. When they’re completely covered, wait 10 minutes for them to dry.
If you’re using a spray paint besides Krylon, follow the instructions on the can.
Step 3: glue on the lace
Cut the lace to the appropriate size and hot glue it around your cans.
When you’re finished, you’ll have some super cute cans. You can use them for storage, as a vase or put them on your desk at work to hold pens and other office supplies. Oooorrrrr you could put them in your bathroom to hold your makeup brushes! So many options.
I can’t wait to hear your thoughts! Leave your feedback in the comments.
Happy crafting.
This is a craft made for The Craft Challenge. Don’t forget to check out Emily’s tin craft over at A Pop of Red.
It’s amazing and didn’t look like you’ve artistically given such shade to cans. Beautiful:)
Thank you!
Lol, I totally went with tuna cans! I was so stuck for this challenge. But we both had lace, great minds 🙂
Awesome! I had tuna cans sitting around in anticipation of the this challenge.

These would make perfect flower vases. A few mismatched sizes painted in the same color and grouped together would be such a lovely centerpiece.
Also, I loved it that you used lace.
That would be perfect! They would make great flower vases. I think the lave gives it some extra oomph 👍
Lace*
I love that colour with that lace!
Thanks so much! I enjoy that color too. I’d like to do a version with baby blue or a light purple too. I think they would look nice with lace.
