I have wanted to attempt to make my own lip balm since I started my blog about two and half years ago. It’s sad that I am just now getting around to it because it is sooooo easy.
I go through a lot of lip balm. Way more than the average person, so I plan to save money by making my own. I plan to make a base and save that so that when I want to make a new kind, I can just melt the base and add whatever flavoring or colors I want.
Altogether, I would say this took me about half an hour to forty-five minutes, not counting the time it took for the lip balm to harden.
Things You Will Need:
A pot
Tongs
Beeswax
Glass jar
Jojoba oil
Coconut oil
Peppermint oil
Lip balm tubes
If you don’t have any of the above, you can get them on amazon. I’ve added links to all of the supplies I bought from there. The coconut oil is from Trader Joe’s, the jojoba oil is from Giant Eagle, and I got the mason jar from a hobby shop.
I know the peppermint oil is expensive, but I like Doterra most of all the essential oil brands. You can pick whatever kind you want, just make sure it’s edible.
Step 1
Start off by boiling a few cups of water.
Step 2
Combine beeswax, coconut oil, and jojoba oil into the mason jar.
I used 1 oz beeswax, and 1 oz of coconut and 1 oz jojoba oil.
It doesn’t matter which oils you use, but make sure that you use double the amount of oils as you do beeswax.
Step 3
Put your jar of beeswax into the boiling water and wait for it to melt. The beeswax takes a while. When it is all liquified, you can add in your scent. I probably added about 15 drops of peppermint to mine and it ended up being VERY peppermint-y, but I like it that way.
Step 4
While your materials are melting you can sen set up your tubes. I used a plastic container to hold them all, but you can use a bowl or tupperware container. Just make sure they are all standing upright.
Step 5
Stick a small funnel in one of the tubes and start to pour in the lip balm. Continue until the tubes are filled. Let it sit for about an hour before you do anything else with them.
Obviously, I didn’t do such an awesome job filling mine the whole way to the top, but it still works. I wasn’t able to fill all 25 tubes, so I had 4 left over. I’m going to have to buy some more for my next experiment.
I was pleasantly surprised as to how well these turned out. I’m seriously never going to buy lip balm again. Ever. This was a good blend of the materials, but if you like your lip balm a little more oily than the regular Chap Stick brand, you might want to add a little more oil to this recipe.
Aaaannnndddd if you want to get super crafty, you could make your own lip balm labels. I didn’t get to that this weekend, but I plan to do that soon! Stay tuned for that DIY project and probably a few more lip balm creations.
Hope you liked this one. Happy crafting 🙂
Great idea! 🙂 I will have give this a try. It looks super easy.
It was REALLY easy. The part that takes the longest is waiting for everything to melt and then harden. I am going to do this whenever I need lip balm from now on. Let me know how it goes if you try it!
I surely will! 🙂 Where did you find the lip balm containers?
Got them on Amazon. If you look under the Things You Will Need section in the post, there’s a link to the products on Amazon. It was delivered quickly too!
Thanks ! I’ve pinned the tutorial so that i wont forget.
Thanks! Can’t wait to see how you like it!
Awesome job Megan. Glad you enjoy doing this kind of stuff.
Thanks Mom. I can’t believe you don’t like it 😉
I too thought it was complicated, but this I will try 🙂
